Are swimming lessons really important?

Swimming lessons are something that comes up in conversation pretty early on, once your little one arrives.

Apart from some of the obvious reasons I thought I would share a story that happened to a friend last week.

She enrolled her babe in lessons at 5 months old and completed a term. Many people would ask what do they even do at that age? It was a very gentle introduction to being in water and singing songs. She enrolled her child because they love water, bath time was a favourite activity as well as the important reason of water safety.

So off she went and they attended each week both really enjoying there time together. Her little boy was excited to go each week, smiled at the teacher and appeared to really love the water as she had anticipated. That's when the weather turned a little cool, getting out of the house was a bit harder and getting out of the wet bathers not so fun. So after lots of thought and discussion with hubby she thought they would have a break for winter, what difference could a small break make when he loved the water so much, right?

They enjoyed there winter and when spring was approaching they signed back up. She was convinced that they would just get straight back into it as bath times continued to be the highlight of the day. Unfortunately she was wrong. The first few minutes was fine but once he realised the class now do a lot more, her little one clung onto her like a little monkey, screaming when the teacher gave instructions. He had to spend most of the class playing on the side of the pool with his mum because he was too overwhelmed by the class activities.

So with all of that, she is fine knowing that they need to spend more time in the pool together but how quickly things can change. No one wants their child to be unhappy especially when you are paying a weekly fee but swimming lessons are so important. So she will have a few plays at the local pool in-between classes to help the exposure and she is sure he will love it once again. It just goes to show that in this case the repetition of the weekly class was important after all. Although there is plenty of time to turn things around he went from being super confident and happy to scared and unhappy very quickly.

Drowning in Australia has shocking statistics so teaching water safety at a young age IS important!

So if you take anything from this post

-consistency is important, children adapt quickly but sometimes forget quickly

-water safety saves lives

-swimming is a life skill
